The Epsom & Ewell Food Growing group has been set up in order to encourage more people locally to grow their own food. Already a great many people in the Borough grow a little – many grow a few tomatoes on a patio, or some potatoes in pots – but we would like to help more people to give it a go, and try some new things.
It is estimated that for every Calorie of food energy that gets onto our plates, it has taken 10 Calories of fossil fuel energy to get it there. That includes chemicals used in growing the plants, machinery on the farm, transport, processing, packaging, the food selling process, getting it home, and finally cooking it.
So if we can reduce the amount of food we have to get from elsewhere, we will be making considerable cuts in our total use of fossil fuels, and therefore also of carbon emissions.
Growing our own food also has the benefits of saving money, getting better tasting and more fresh vegetables onto our plates, getting some healthy exercise and contact with the living world, and increases our food security against world problems such as fuel prices in future.
Altogether a win-win situation!
The group is still very young, and finding its feet, but we have lots of great ideas for things to do this summer.
New Event! High Street Stall on 14 May
The Food Group will have a stall in the High Street Market Place on Thursday 14 May, from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm. There will be lots of cheap vegetable seedlings (runner beans, French beans, courgettes, leeks, cabbage, kale, spinach) and plenty of good advice to get you started. Come along – and bring your friends and neighbours!
If you would like to know more about the Food Group, or sign up to our email newsletters (we hope to start those shortly) please get in touch.
